About & Methodology

By BuildCalcs · Updated

BuildCalcs provides 36 free construction and home-improvement calculators that estimate how much material a project needs.

How we calculate

Every calculator uses a standard, published formula — area × depth for bulk materials, cylinder volume for tube forms, slope factors for roofs, and so on. Each calculator page shows its exact formula and a fully worked numeric example, so you can check the math yourself.

Where materials are sold by the bag, ton, or roll, we use widely published yields (for example, an 80 lb bag of concrete yields about 0.6 cubic feet) and round up to whole units. Most calculators include a waste allowance for cutting, breakage, and uneven surfaces.

Accuracy & responsibility

Results are estimates for planning and budgeting. Real projects vary with site conditions, product specifications, and technique. Always confirm quantities against the product packaging and follow local building codes — for structural work (footings, retaining walls, framing), consult a qualified professional.

Units

Calculators default to US/imperial units (feet, inches, square feet, cubic yards, tons, gallons, and bags), the standard for buying building materials in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
