Square Footage Calculator

By BuildCalcs · Updated

Enter the length and width of a space to get its area in square feet — plus square yards, square meters, and acres. Square footage is the starting point for most material estimates on this site.

Set to add up several identical rooms or sections.

Area120 square feet
Square yards13.33 sq yd
Square meters11.15
Acres0.003 acres

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
  2. For an L-shaped or irregular space, split it into rectangles, calculate each, and add them using the "number of areas" field or by adding the results.
  3. Use the square yards figure for carpet and the square meters figure for metric products.

The formula

Area of a rectangle = length × width. With both sides in feet, the result is in square feet.

To convert: square yards = square feet ÷ 9; square meters = square feet ÷ 10.764; acres = square feet ÷ 43,560.

For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, find each one, and sum them.

Worked example

A room 12 ft long and 10 ft wide.

  1. Area = 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft
  2. Square yards = 120 ÷ 9 ≈ 13.3 sq yd
  3. Square meters = 120 ÷ 10.764 ≈ 11.15 m²

The room is 120 square feet (about 13.3 square yards).

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate square footage?

Multiply length by width, both in feet. A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. For multiple rooms, calculate each and add them together.

How do I find the square footage of an irregular room?

Divide the space into rectangles. Calculate the square footage of each rectangle, then add them up for the total area.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

There are 9 square feet in a square yard (3 ft × 3 ft). To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9.
