The formula
Area of a rectangle = length × width. With both sides in feet, the result is in square feet.
To convert: square yards = square feet ÷ 9; square meters = square feet ÷ 10.764; acres = square feet ÷ 43,560.
For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, find each one, and sum them.
Worked example
A room 12 ft long and 10 ft wide.
Area = 12 × 10 = 120 sq ftSquare yards = 120 ÷ 9 ≈ 13.3 sq ydSquare meters = 120 ÷ 10.764 ≈ 11.15 m²
The room is 120 square feet (about 13.3 square yards).
